Watch ESPN360 in Ubuntu Linux Using WINE

Last week I posted a review of ESPN360.com and how happy I was to be able to watch tons of out of market games for free online.  One thing that I failed to mention is that the official website states that ESPN360 is only available for Windows and Mac users, so Linux is not on the officially supported list.  Since I have a dual boot system, I always have the option of restarting in Vista, but it seemed like it should be able to play in Linux.

I spent a couple hours searching and trying some different things and ended up getting it to work in Ubuntu Karmic using WINE.  It is a bit buggy and not as smooth as the Windows version, but if you don’t have Windows or Mac or don’t want to logout of Linux, the following steps should get you up and running in Ubuntu. Upgrade to Adobe AIR 2 in Linux Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit

If you followed one of my previous posts for installing TweetDeck or Seesmic in Ubuntu 64 bit you are currently running AIR version 1.5.  You already have all of the dependencies needed to run AIR on a 64 bit system so upgrading to AIR 2.0 is quite simple.  If you do not currently have AIR installed start with the TweetDeck installation post to get the required 32 bit dependencies before following these instructions for adding AIR 2.0. Install latest Flash Player 10 Alpha in 64-bit Linux

On December 8, 2009 Adobe released the latest alpha refresh for Flash Player 10 for 64-bit Linux.

Key New Features

3D Effects – Easily transform and animate any display object through 3D space while retaining full interactivity.  Fast, lightweight, and native 3D effects make motion that was previously reserved for expert users available to everyone.  Complex effects are simple with APIs that extend what you already know.

Custom Filters and Effects – Create and share your own portable filters, blend modes, and fills using Adobe Pixel Bender™, the same technology used for many After Effects CS3 filters. Shaders in Flash Player are about 1KB and can be scripted and animated at runtime. Read the rest of this entry »

Install Seesmic Desktop on Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit

It seems like most of the news related to Twitter clients and social networking applications ends up coming down to TweetDeck and Seesmic.  Although, I typically use Digsby when logged into my Windows PC because it also offers e-mail notifications, the Linux version is not available yet.  I have previously blogged about how to install TweetDeck on Ubuntu Karmic 64 bit, I have been seeing a lot of updates about Seesmic offering new features and enhancement so I thought I should give it a try.  Since I already installed Adobe AIR when I installed Tweetdeck, the installation for Seesmic which also uses Adobe AIR was quick and easy.  All I had to do was go to the site and download it and it installed right away through Air.  I will post the steps for installing Air from my previous post, Install TweetDeck on 64 bit Ubuntu Linux Desktop, or you can click on the link to that post and install TweetDeck too.  If you already have Air installed just follow the link to go to the site and install Seesmic. Install an OS in Sun Virtual Box.

In my previous post I discussed installing Virtual Box in Ubuntu, in this post I will explain how to install a new OS within Virtual Box.  There are several methods for installing a new OS on Virtual box.  You can find a .vdi file from various sources or searching Google, www.virtualboximages.com has a pretty wide selection, but you have to pay for them.  I prefer to download an ISO file and install it myself rather than using a pre-created vdi image.  The process may take a little longer to download and go through the install process, but I am more comfortable downloading the distribution directly.  You can use a site like www.distrowatch.com to see what is new and popular and visit the site to download it.
