I always like having the latest versions of software, with the release of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on October 29th I wanted to perform an update on my home server to test the new features. Additional information regarding Ubuntu Server can be found at www.ubunutu.com and a list of new features in version 9.10 can be located here.
As with any update you should always backup your important information and make sure that your existing software has all updates. My information is stored on the server and an external hard drive so I am already backed up. The next thing I needed to do is open a command prompt on my desktop that is connected to the server. This can be done from a Linux Desktop, but my normal choice is to use Putty from my Vista Desktop, see my post on Creating a Home Server with Ubuntu Server if you need more information regarding this.

As I stated in my last post, I am trying to use the Ubuntu OS more on my dual boot system, but I am not accustomed to a lot of the programs so usually end up reverting back to Windows when I can’t find something comparable. As I am writing blogs in Ubuntu, I am really missing LiveWriter for the features and easy publishing. In searching google for an alternative, it seems that I am not alone. After installing WINE to see if I could use Windows LiveWriter with that, I discovered that it is not an option due to the framework. I am not crazy about running a virtual box, which is one of the solutions I found. If I need to run Windows, it is probably easier to just reboot in Vista and run it from there. I have had a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu system for a while now. I never spend much time in Ubuntu since I am familiar with the programs in Vista and it has seemed to be more of a chore to install some of the Linux applications even though they are normally free and open source.
With the recent talk of Windows 7 and knowing that I don’t want to be paying for a new OS every few years, I thought that it was time to start putting more effort into using Ubuntu and installing programs to make it more useful. I started by using the Synaptic Software manager to install Kblogger, if you are reading this post the blogging software is working.
The next application I decided to install was TweetDeck which requires the Adobe AIR software. I searched for help on the Adobe site when the software did not directly install from Firefox. Read the rest of this entry »

Over the years I have created various e-mail accounts as well as the addition of various social networking accounts. Some of the e-mail accounts are old and barely used, but I have had them for years so I am not ready to delete them, but checking them all on a regular basis can be a pain. It can also be time consuming to log into Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Linkedin for updates.
That is where Digsby comes in, it allows you to manage all of your accounts and contacts in one place. I was able to remove my Gtalk and Windows Messenger that I used to update me when I received e-mail on those accounts. I was also able to add the POP3 mail accounts from my Internet provider and website. You get popup messages when there is a new e-mail and you can click on the items for a preview to determine whether you want to read the whole message right away. Read the rest of this entry »
