Watch ESPN360 in Ubuntu Linux Using WINE

Last week I posted a review of ESPN360.com and how happy I was to be able to watch tons of out of market games for free online.  One thing that I failed to mention is that the official website states that ESPN360 is only available for Windows and Mac users, so Linux is not on the officially supported list.  Since I have a dual boot system, I always have the option of restarting in Vista, but it seemed like it should be able to play in Linux.

I spent a couple hours searching and trying some different things and ended up getting it to work in Ubuntu Karmic using WINE.  It is a bit buggy and not as smooth as the Windows version, but if you don’t have Windows or Mac or don’t want to logout of Linux, the following steps should get you up and running in Ubuntu. Google Wave Invites for first 8 comments

I finally received a Google Wave invite and realized that it isn’t very useful if you don’t have anyone to Wave with.  I have 8 invites available, if you would like to receive one, post a comment with the gmail address that you would like the invite sent to.

The invites will go to the first 8 comments I get, I am not looking for specific content – send me an invite is fine.  Once the 8 invites are sent that is all I have and I will update the post, please do not keep asking if you were not one of the first 8, I can only send what I have.

Please also be aware that google does not always send the invites right away, I am not sure what their process is behind the scenes, on the invite page it says “Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick.”

While your here feel free to check out the other articles on the site and subscribe to my RSS or Twitter updates.  I try to provide useful technology info with a focus on Android and Linux.

Improving Google Voice Transcriptions

One of the best features of Google Voice is the ability of the service to transcribe voicemails and send them to you via email or text message.  Sometimes it is easier to read the message rather than calling or using the Google Voice Application on my phone to listen to the message.  This is extremely helpful if you are in a place where you can’t answer your phone and want to see what the call is about without having to listen to the message.

After a couple months of using the transcription feature I have seen varying results on the usefulness.  It seems to be fairly good at getting the correct information from telemarketers and companies that talk slow and clearly.  With calls from my friends and people that talk like you would in a normal conversation, the results need some improvement.

As usual, Google is always working to improve their products and released some information on their approach to improving the transcriptions on the Google Voice Blog. In the past, there was an option to select a checkmark to indicate whether the transcription was helpful or not.  Now when you select whether the transcription was helpful, Google asks if you would like to donate the voicemail so they can review it to make the transcriptions more useful. Trapster Mobile Phone Application Review

This week I had to travel from the Hartford area to the Syracuse area, which is about a five hour drive.  When I purchased my Droid, I also purchased a universal car mount for using the navigation feature, but I knew the route which was mostly highway so I decided to load the Trapster application to test it out on a long highway trip.

Trapster is a popular application on the iPhone and available for many other smart phones and navigation units, and if you don’t have a smart phone or supported navigation unit, you can get text alerts and report traps with a toll free telephone number.  For more information directly from the company, check out their website at Trapster.com Read the rest of this entry »
