On November 23, 2009 Opera released the latest version of the Opera Browser, version 10.10. If you followed my previous post for adding Opera, the browser should be updated automatically by doing an update. If you do not already have Opera, you can download and install the latest version via the Gdebi Package installer from Opera here.

As you will see on the welcome page, Opera offers several unique features not available in other browsers:
1) Opera Unite
Use applications to share content with others in a quick and easy way.
2) Opera Turbo
Boost your speed with our powerful servers to compress Web pages, so you get them faster.
3) Visual tabs
Drag the handle underneath the tabs to reveal thumbnails of your open Web pages.
4) Customizable Speed Dial
Get easy access to your favorite sites every time you open a new tab. Choose the layout and the background you prefer.
5) Opera Link
Synchronize your Speed Dial, bookmarks, notes and other useful data.
Most of the features were available in previous versions, but I am going to going to take a deeper look at Opera Unite since it is new. Clicking on the Stream Music link will open up the Opera Unite setup window.
If you do not have an Opera account you will be asked to create one.
After you create the account, Opera Unite will ask which folder contains your music files.
After setting up the folder it will take you to the Opera Unite Administration page within the Opera Browser. From here you can set a password that is needed to access your music files from any web browser. You can set it to public as well, but I am not comfortable with that especially if I plan to use the file sharing or other applications. Now you can access your music files on your computer from any web browser as long as the computer is on at home with Opera running.
This functionality seems very similar to the Orb server which I have used in Windows to stream files at work or to my BlackBerry. I am not big on leaving the computer on at home just to be able to access music or files, but it could be useful if you know you might need access when you are out. There are also several other applications that can be added including a web server, photo sharing, and a total of 4 pages of applications that are available. I have always liked Opera for its speed and innovative ideas and although this might not be something that I cannot live without it is refreshing to see new features coming out.
