Installing Opera in Ubuntu Karmic Koala was one of the easiest installations I have done in Ubuntu. I already have added Google Chrome which is the fastest browser that I have used, but I like to have a choice when surfing the web and Opera has features that Firefox and Chrome don’t have. The install can be done without opening a terminal by going directly to the Opera download page here.

After you select the Karmic Koala checkbox, leave the default package and click on the big Download Opera button.
A popup box will open asking what to do with the download, you can leave the default to open it with the Gdebi Package Installer and press OK.

The Package Installer will open with some information about the Opera Web Browser, you can press Install Package to begin the installation.

The Package Installer box will pop up again indicating that the installation is complete.

Now you can close Firefox and go to Applications -> Internet -> Opera to start the Opera Browser and you are ready to use Opera.

If you are new to Opera be sure to click on the Opera Tips link to check out all of the features available for the browser. The speed dial is probably the feature that Opera is best known for, but I also like the mouse gestures to speed up surfing and the Widgets provide a lot of fun things to try out. Test it out and leave a comment on your opinion of Opera.

You seem to be new to Opera, as your comment about the “best known feature of Opera” indicates. Just so you know, Opera was the first browser to include tabbed browsing (has been that way since the beginning), mouse gestures, fast Javascript execution, standards support, voice browsing and many more.
