Synchronize Bookmarks on a Dual Boot System

Since installing and using Ubuntu 9.10 more on my dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system I learned quickly that I am lost without my bookmarks in Firefox.  One of the first things I did was install Xmarks Free Bookmark Sync on Firefox in both Operating Systems.  Now, whether I am using Vista or Ubuntu, if I add a Bookmark it is available regardless of which operating system I am using.  I have found this to happen most often if I am using Vista and discover something that I would like to test in Linux.  Rather than having to write it down and reboot, I can just save the bookmark and open it up after I have booted into Ubuntu.

Xmarks is also available for other Browsers, but the Chrome version does not work in Linux yet and the Windows version is still in Beta.  I also prefer to have different bookmarks in my various browsers, but if you would like to sync Safari and IE with the same bookmarks feel free to add the extension to each of them.  You can also use the tool to synch bookmarks on various computers as long as it is installed, but my main purpose is my dual boot system.

You can download all of the versions from the Xmarks website here.

After the extension is installed you will have to restart the browser.  A setup screen will open up, if you do not have an account you can create one the first time.  After the account is setup and you add it to other browsers just login with the same information and you will be asked how to import the Bookmarks from the server.  I chose to merge the information so I keep any bookmarks that I have.

Now whenever you add or delete a bookmark, it will be updated on the Xmarks server so that every time you use a browser while logged into Xmarks, it will have the same bookmarks.
