Capturing BlackBerry Screen Shots

Many of the topics that I plan to blog about involve BlackBerry applications so I wanted to find a way to capture the screenshots.  As always, my first choice was to find free software since there are usually suitable options available if you are willing to look for them and spend some time learning how to use them.

A quick google search led me to a free application called Capture It! created by TheTechMogul.  You can download the software via desktop by following the link above, or by going to http://m.thetechmogul.com on your mobile browser to download the software directly OTA.

Once the software downloads it will ask you to verify the permissions and you are ready to go.  At this point you will be able to capture screenshots by selecting the BlackBerry Menu button and choose Capture It as seen below, you will know that the capture took place because the device will vibrate.  If you use the Menu Button, you will not see the menu on the left in the screenshot.

In order to capture exactly what is on the screen including the menus as shown above, or if you want to capture the home screen, which is not available on the Storm by using the menu button because it shows all of your folders instead of a menu, you will need to apply the application to another key.

I decided to use the Left Convenience key since I do not use the voice dialing feature.  You do this by selecting Options, Screen/Keyboard.

Find the option for Left Side Convenience Key Opens: and select Capture It from the list of applications.  Make sure to Save the setting and you now have two options available for screen captures.

With either option, the device will vibrate after a screen capture takes place.  You can find the pictures by going to the Media folder, under Pictures.

In order to save them to your computer you can e-mail them from the Pictures folder, but if you have several screen captures the best option is to connect via the USB cable and find the folder on the BlacBerry with the pictures and copy or drag them all at once.  In my case the pictures were found by going to Computer –> BlackBerry2(M:) –> BlackBerry –> pictures.  The picture below is an example of the homescreen on my Storm using the Left Convenience Key.
