Upgrade Ubuntu Desktop 9.04 to 9.10 Karmic Koala

Now that I have updated Ubuntu Server to the latest version, it’s time to update my desktop to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.  The reviews I have seen have been very positive and I am hoping to be able to devote more of my PC time to using Ubuntu rather than Windows.  Although the Server upgrade was pretty simple, the desktop upgrade is even easier since it can all be done through the GUI rather than using the command prompt.

Update Ubuntu Server 9.04 to 9.10

I always like having the latest versions of software, with the release of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on October 29th I wanted to perform an update on my home server to test the new features.  Additional information regarding Ubuntu Server can be found at www.ubunutu.com and a list of new features in version 9.10 can be located here.

As with any update you should always backup your important information and make sure that your existing software has all updates.  My information is stored on the server and an external hard drive so I am already backed up.  The next thing I needed to do is open a command prompt on my desktop that is connected to the server.  This can be done from a Linux Desktop, but my normal choice is to use Putty from my Vista Desktop, see my post on Creating a Home Server with Ubuntu Server if you need more information regarding this.

“My Verizon” App pushed to BlackBerry Storm

A couple days ago after updating to OS 5.0 I noticed that Verizon had pushed the “My Verizon” application to my Storm.  I wasn’t sure what it was so I checked online to find out that the My Verizon application was launched earlier this year for trackball BlackBerries to allow users to check their minutes and data usage, view account balance, make payments, view plan, add/remove features and change their voicemail passwords directly on the handset.

BlackBerry Storm 9530 Update to OS 5.0

I was excited last night when I started seeing tweets about Verizon finally launching BlackBerry OS 5.0.  At 10:15 pm eastern time I plugged in my USB cable and opened up the Desktop Manager.  After clicking on the check for updates button, I was told that an update was available.  I verified my backup options, hit next a couple times and let the system begin the download and install.  About an hour later the installation to version 5.0.0.328 was complete.

ScribeFire Firefox plugin for Linux Ubuntu Blog Posting

As I stated in my last post, I am trying to use the Ubuntu OS more on my dual boot system, but I am not accustomed to a lot of the programs so usually end up reverting back to Windows when I can’t find something comparable.  As I am writing blogs in Ubuntu, I am really missing LiveWriter for the features and easy publishing.  In searching google for an alternative, it seems that I am not alone.  After installing WINE to see if I could use Windows LiveWriter with that, I discovered that it is not an option due to the framework.  I am not crazy about running a virtual box, which is one of the solutions I found.  If I need to run Windows, it is probably easier to just reboot in Vista and run it from there.
